Each week I will be giving you definitions for different letters of the alphabet and will continue through the alphabet until we are done with all the letters.
Here are some definitions beginning with the letter “P”
Panel Boxes are the metal box where the power for the house is all centrally located. From there it is broken down into zones which supply different areas of the home and appliances. Breaker switches are used to control whether the power is “on” or “off” to each zone and there is a main switch that turns everything off at once.
PAR lamps stands for parabolic aluminized reflector. The silver reflector inside the lamp (bulb) reflects more light than other incandescent lamps and depending on the shape of the lens (outer glass) can produce different widths of beam spread.
Percale fabric has been used for a long time in sheeting and other items requiring durablitly. It is a uniform weave illustrated above. The higher the thread count the stiffer the fabric.
Perspective drawings are used by Architects and Interior Designers to illustrate as closely as possible what the finished project will look like. The basic principal is that as things get farther away they get smaller in size and stay in line with the focal point (s) or vanishing point. Things in the distance also appear proportionally lighter in color.
Carpet pile is the surface yarn. Loop pile refers to a surface that is made up of many little loops from the tufting process. Cut pile is the same loops which have then been sheared off to leave a cut edge at the top of the carpet. Many carpets are a blend of cut and loop pile. Cut pile is softer than loop pile but shows wear more eaily since the cut ends are exposed and crushed as the carpet is walked on. Pile heights go from very low to quite tall like shag rugs. More densly woven carpets are more durable because they hold the pile in position so that it won’t crush as easily. Because they also have more yarn in them, they are also more expensive.
