Every profession has it's own special language and Interior Design, Architecture and Construction are no different. 

Each week I will be giving you definitions for words beginning with different letters of the alphabet and will continue through the alphabet until we are done with all the letters.

 

Here are some more words beginning with "P".

PLINTH

plinth, plinth block definition

 A Plinth or Plinth Block is a base.  It is larger that what is sitting upon it and creates a base for the object (column, sculpture, door trim, etc.).  They are often classical is style and shape.

PLYWOOD

plywood defintion, plywood use in construction and furniture

 Plywood is a common type of wood used in construction, fabrication of furniture and buildings and is structurally strong because it is made of several "Plys" or levels of wood with the grain going the opposite way on each layer.  Plywood can have a few plys or many plys and the more there are the stronger it is.  The top ply or layer is often of a decorative wood and is used where a finished surface is desired, such as plywood furniture, cabinets or walls.  You can see the number of plys in a piece of plywood by looking at the end.  Some plywood is made with exterior grade glue so it can be used outdoors and not be damaged by water.  It is also used over the framing of a builidng to provide shear strength and is call a shear wall.

PONGEE

Pongee is a beautifful fabric with a tight weave that is most often made of silk.  It has a nice body to it so it reflects a soft luster and can be used for upholstery and draperies.

 

PORTE COCHERE

 A Porte Cochere was originally a word the French used for Coach door.  It is seen in many hotels and large mansions and is a large extended roof from the entrance and continuing over the driveway.  The porte cochere protects the guess from the elements as they get out of their cars and enter the building.
