INTERIOR DESIGN - Architectural & Interior Design Definitions "O"

Every profession has it's own unique language and Interior Design, Architecture and Construction are no different. 

Each week I will be giving you definitions for words beginning with different letters of the alphabet and will continue through the alphabet until we are done with all the letters.

Here are some definitions beginning with the letter "O"

OGEE

Ogee is the word used to indicate an "s" curve so each one is not identical.  It is a general term and is used to define the shape of a molding or counter or furniture edge.  It's gentle shape is pleasing to the eye.

 

ORMOLU

The French word Ormolu refers to the gold coating on decorative bronze ornaments.  It is seen in museums as applied decoration on many pieces of fine furniture and decorative items like clocks and vases.  The designs are quite detailed and fluid.  The pieces were applied to wooden furniture with tiny nails.

 

OTTOMAN

Ottomans are very common in households today.  They come in all sizes and shapes and are upholstered in many different materials like leather, kilim rugs, fabric and vinyl.  They are popular since they can be moved around and used as footrests or extra seating.

 

OUSHAK RUGS

Oushak rugs are hand knotted rugs made in the traditional Turkish tribal designs that were usually made with a center medallion and natural warm colors form native plants.  The earthy colors were terracotta,  saffron, cinnamon, greens, reds and browns.  Today the designs are reproduced in India and Pakistan.
