Every profession has it’s own special language and Interior Design, Architecture and Construction are no different.

Each week I will be giving you definitions for different letters of the alphabet and will continue through the alphabet until we are done with all the letters.

Here are some definitions beginning with the letter “S”

Sateen is a beautiful satiny smooth feeling fabric usually made of cotton by exposing more vertical threads on the right side of the fabric than in typical weaves.  It is used in clothing, drapery fabric and especially sheeting as it has a smooth luxurious look and feel.

Some people incorrectly pronounce this word as scone (as in the type you eat).  A sconce is a wall mounted light fixture and can be functional or strictly decorative.  The word originally meant a bracket that held a candle or candles.

A section drawing is found on blueprints for construction.  It shows what a part or cross section would look like when cut away.  It can be looking at the item or part of the plan from the top or from the side and is helpful in understanding how it is to be built and it’s component parts.

The edges of a piece of fabric where the weave is different from the rest of the fabric in order to keep the fabric from unraveling.  It is usually a tighter weave and cut off in the fabrication process when upholstering or making draperies.  It is a finished edge but generally not attractive.

Next week I will continue with more definitions beginning with the letter “S”.
